Patients Seen Inpatient and outpatient experiences are merged on each service. Each team has a non-operative day, during which the residents are expected to be in the clinical offices evaluating new patients and seeing postoperative patients. The operating resident is expected to participate in the preoperative evaluation of the patient, as well as their postoperative care. The General Surgical Services and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service admit between 3,000 and 3,200 patients annually. These services perform between 8,000 and 8,875 procedures annually. The main operating suite has 13 fully-equipped operating theaters and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit has 16 fully-monitored beds. Residents also have access to a fully-equipped noninvasive vascular laboratory. The Fletcher Allen Health Care 562-bed Medical Center Campus provides secondary care for the 141,000 residents of Chittenden County and tertiary care for approximately one million people in Vermont and upstate New York. Fletcher Allen Health Care and the University of Vermont's Division of Health Sciences, which includes the College of Medicine, School of Allied Health Sciences, and School of Nursing, make up the Vermont Academic Medical Center. The Fanny Allen Campus provides rehabilitation services, and with its five operating rooms and additional procedure and endoscopy suites, serves as an outpatient surgery center. |
